End of career
On 29 October, Anela Merkel, who has served as German Chancellor for 13 years now, announced she would not run for the post after the current term, which is scheduled to end in 2021.
The leader also stated she would not seek reelection as CDU’s (EPP) Chairperson during the upcoming Party Congress or even a parliamentary mandate. „I will not pursue any more political positions”, she clarified.
This comes after a series of elections, most notably regional elections in Bavaria and Hesse, which saw CDU and its allies lose a significant share of the vote and many of their deputies replaced by those of the Greens or anti-establishment, conservative Alternative for Germany.
It is uncertain who is to replace Merkel.
